The programme, sponsored by the Women and Children Network Development Foundation (WCNDF), aimed to educate farmers on good agricultural practices while promoting the production and consumption of nutritious foods to improve household health and income.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of WCNDF, Rev. Akusika, together with the Project Coordinator, Dr. Bonsi, welcomed participants and resource persons. They stressed the importance of collaboration between the agriculture and health sectors in addressing challenges affecting women and children in the district.
The South Dayi District Director of Agriculture, Mr. Nusianu Avedzida, urged participants to adopt improved farming practices to enhance productivity and reduce losses. He highlighted the importance of climate-smart agriculture, government and district support programmes, and the strengthening of farmer groups and cooperatives.
The South Dayi District Health Director, Mr. Jonas Timbire Kolog, noted that health and agriculture remain essential pillars of community development. Addressing maternal health concerns, he revealed that anaemia continues to be a challenge in the district. According to him, out of 1,914 pregnant women recorded in South Dayi in 2025, 214 were diagnosed with anaemia. He also disclosed that low birth weight cases were recorded among the 1,624 live births registered during the period. He therefore encouraged participants to prioritize proper nutrition during pregnancy and early childhood.
Participants took part in interactive sessions and question-and-answer discussions on various topics presented by experts. Mr. Carl Azumah delivered a presentation on good agricultural practices and post-harvest management, focusing on proper drying, storage, and handling techniques to reduce post-harvest losses.
Maternal and reproductive health issues were discussed by Elikplim Banini, who educated participants on antenatal care, family planning, and safe motherhood practices. Gideon Norvor also spoke on child health issues in Ghana, highlighting common childhood illnesses, immunization, and the importance of early treatment seeking.
Beatrice Debe addressed nutritional challenges and solutions, emphasizing dietary diversity, the use of locally available foods, and measures to prevent malnutrition. Happy Alonu further highlighted the roles of individuals, communities, and stakeholders in tackling nutritional challenges through collective action and community-led initiatives.
At the end of the programme, participants expressed commitment to applying the knowledge gained to improve farming practices and household nutrition. Organizers said the training reinforced the strong link between agriculture and health in promoting sustainable community development.
A free health screening was also conducted for participants to help detect and prevent common health conditions at an early stage.
