Atwima Mponua Makes History as District Declared Child Labour-Free

History was made in the Atwima Mponua District on the 7th July, 2026 as government officials, traditional leaders, development partners and residents gathered at Kuffour Camp to celebrate a milestone that has placed the district among Ghana's shining examples in the fight against child labour.

The colourful ceremony was attended by the Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Hon. Dr. Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, Member of Parliament for Wa Central; the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Frank Amoakohene; the District Chief Executive, Hon. Issahak Ibrahim; the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana; traditional authorities, community leaders, civil society organisations, schoolchildren and other distinguished guests.

The event, organised by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan, recognised the remarkable progress made by the district in protecting children from exploitation and promoting their right to education.

The day's most significant moment came when Atwima Mponua was officially declared a Child Labour-Free Zone, marking a major achievement in the district's efforts to eliminate child labour and secure a better future for its children.

The declaration reflects years of collaboration between the Government of Ghana, JICA, the Embassy of Japan, traditional authorities, community leaders, civil society organisations and residents, all working together to ensure that children are protected, remain in school and have the opportunity to realise their full potential.

Addressing the gathering, Ashanti Regional Minister Hon. Dr. Frank Amoakohene described the recognition as a beginning rather than a destination. "This achievement is not the end of our journey but the beginning of a renewed commitment to sustain the gains the district has made in the fight against child labour. We will continue to work with all stakeholders to ensure that every child is protected from exploitation and has access to quality education, a safe environment and equal opportunities to thrive."

District Chief Executive Hon. Issahak Ibrahim expressed profound appreciation to the Government of Ghana, JICA, the Embassy of Japan and all development partners whose support made the historic achievement possible. "On behalf of the people of Atwima Mponua, I sincerely thank the Government of Ghana, JICA, the Embassy of Japan, our development partners and every individual whose dedication has made this success possible. Together, let us continue to build a district where every child is free to dream, learn and succeed."

Following the ceremony, the Ashanti Regional Minister joined officials of the District Assembly on an inspection tour of key development projects financed through the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).

The delegation visited the Kindergarten Block at Akotaa D/A Basic School, the six-unit classroom block at Agogoso, and the GH¢41 million 24-Hour Economy Market Project at Nyinahin, alongside several other completed and ongoing infrastructure projects across the district.

The inspection enabled the Regional Minister to assess the quality and progress of work, identify implementation challenges and reaffirm government's commitment to ensuring that public resources translate into meaningful development for communities.

The declaration of Atwima Mponua as a Child Labour-Free Zone, coupled with ongoing investments in education and infrastructure, underscores the district's determination to build a future where every child is protected, every learner is empowered and every community benefits from sustainable development.
