Local Government Minister Begins Nationwide Familiarisation Tour in Ga East, Unveils Performance Assessment Framework for MMDCEs

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, has commenced a nationwide familiarisation tour of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) with a working visit to the Ga East Municipal Assembly.

The visit forms part of efforts by the Ministry to engage local authorities, strengthen decentralised governance and provide strategic direction to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) following their assumption of office.

Addressing the management and staff of the Ga East Municipal Assembly at Abokobi, Hon. Ibrahim outlined the performance assessment framework that will be used to evaluate MMDCEs during their first year in office.

He disclosed that the assessment would be based on key performance indicators, including revenue mobilisation, infrastructure development, sanitation management, quality of service delivery and citizen engagement.

According to the Minister, the framework is intended to promote accountability, improve efficiency and ensure that local authorities effectively contribute to the implementation of the government's development agenda.

"The objective is to measure results, encourage innovation and strengthen the responsiveness of local governance structures to the needs of the people," he stated.

Hon. Ibrahim urged officials of the Assembly to remain committed to their responsibilities and work collaboratively to advance development within their respective jurisdictions.

The Minister noted that the nationwide tour would provide an opportunity for the Ministry to interact directly with Assemblies, identify challenges confronting local governance institutions and offer the necessary support to enhance performance.

The familiarisation exercise is expected to take Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim to several Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies across the country as part of ongoing efforts to deepen decentralisation, monitor the implementation of government policies and improve service delivery at the local level.

The visit to Ga East marks the beginning of what is anticipated to be a comprehensive engagement with local authorities aimed at driving efficiency, accountability and people-centred development across Ghana's local governance system.
