Her appointment in 2017 not only marked a milestone in gender representation but also spotlighted the awareness of gender imbalance in leadership within one of Ghana's most pivotal ministries.

Hajia Alima Mahama, a seasoned lawyer and diplomat, was appointed as Local Government Minister by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his first term in office. Her appointment was hailed by gender advocates as a significant breakthrough in a sector historically dominated by men.

Serving from 2017 to 2021, Hajia Alima prioritized community-driven development, sanitation reforms, and strengthening local government financing.

Following her term as Minister, Hajia Alima Mahama was appointed Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, becoming the first woman to hold that post as well. Her diplomatic acumen and political pedigree have earned her both local and international respect.

Born in Walewale in the Northeastern Region of the country, Hajia Alima holds degrees from the University of Ghana, the University of Ottawa, and Harvard University. Her political career includes service as a Member of Parliament for Nalerigu/Gambaga and Deputy Minister of Women and Children’s Affairs in the early 2000s.

Despite her remarkable tenure, no other woman has succeeded Hajia Alima Mahama in the role. Since the return to constitutional rule in 1992, all other Local Government Ministers have been men.
