The Gomoa East Onion Market, now in its fourth year, is not just a trading post; it’s a catalyst for hope, employment, and regional integration.

The Metropolitan Chief Executive of the area Margaret Naana Ackom in an interview with Ghanadistricts.com indicated that the market has generated thousands of direct and indirect jobs from farmers, transporters, to retailers and loaders reducing unemployment in and around the metropolis.

Again, she said local residents now engage in onion trading, packaging, logistics, and food services, creating multiple income streams.

She further said the place is now serving Central, Western, Eastern, and Western North Regions, and has positioned Gomoa East as a key player in Ghana’s agricultural trade network.

The MCE showered praises on the chiefs and elders who played pivotal role in releasing land for the development, and showcasing the power of inclusive decision-making.

She said the Assembly has facilitated stakeholders’ engagement, ensuring the market’s alignment with district development goals.

Madam Ackom further said Mondays and Thursdays are official trading days, while Sundays and Wednesdays see the arrival of goods coming from Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, and Ghanaian villages, strengthening West African trade ties.

“The Gomoa East Onion Market stands as a beacon of what strategic planning, community leadership, and regional cooperation can achieve. As it continues to grow, it offers lessons in inclusive development, rural revitalization, and economic resilience.” She added.

The market has uplifted one of Ghana’s poverty endemic areas by offering sustainable livelihoods and economic mobility.
