The beneficiary institutions are Awudome Senior High School (AWUSCO) in Tsito, Sokode Senior High Technical School (SOSTECH) in Sokode, and Ho Technical Institute (HTI) in Ho.
The official commissioning ceremony was held on Wednesday, May 14.
The intervention forms part of Phase One of the Minister’s flagship “Water for All” initiative-a regional development project aimed at ensuring equitable access to potable water in schools and communities.
The project, undertaken in partnership with the National Security Secretariat, aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which seeks to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
Speaking at the commissioning, Mr. Gunu reiterated his commitment to tackling water challenges in the Volta Region and noted that access to safe drinking water is not a luxury, but a basic human right that directly impacts health, education, and socio-economic development.
“This is only the beginning,” he said. “My office is determined to extend this initiative to every school and community that lacks reliable access to clean water. Water is not a privilege; it is a necessity-and every citizen of the Volta Region deserves to have it.”
The Minister added that reliable water supply was essential for maintaining hygiene in schools, especially as institutions continued to deal with health risks and sanitation challenges and commended the collaboration between his office and the National Security Secretariat for making the first phase of the project a reality.
School authorities, staff, and students at the beneficiary institutions expressed gratitude for the gesture, describing it as a timely intervention that will significantly reduce the burden of water scarcity on teaching and learning.
The “Water for All” project is expected to continue in phases, targeting other deprived schools and communities throughout the region to create a more inclusive and healthier environment for all.
