Akatsi North’s Water Woes: District Pushes for Major Expansion as Boreholes Struggle to Meet Demand
Water remains one of the most critical challenges in Akatsi North, where 171 boreholes serve as the primary source of year-round supply. Despite 80% of these boreholes being functional, they still fall short of meeting the full needs of the rapidly growing communities spread across the district. For many residents, access to clean water depends on long daily walks, shared borehole schedules, and rationing during peak demand periods.

Piped Water Serves Only the Capital
The district’s small-town water system currently supplies water only to Ave Dakpa, the district capital. Surrounding communities, however, have no access to piped water, leaving boreholes as their only dependable source. This heavy reliance places enormous pressure on groundwater systems and increases the risk of shortages especially during the long dry season.
Residents Still Depend on Dams and Rainwater
Outside the capital, many households are left with no option but to rely on dams and collected rainwater for drinking, cooking, and domestic chores. This seasonal dependency exposes residents to health risks, waterborne diseases, and sanitation challenges, particularly when dam water levels drop or become contaminated.
Water Expansion Seen as Catalyst for Development
Local leaders believe that a major expansion of the district’s water system would spark significant social and economic transformation. Reliable water is essential for households, farms, and businesses, especially those in agro-processing and small-scale manufacturing. A stronger water network would create fertile ground for new investments and enhance the district’s appeal for future development projects.
Aging Pipelines Demand Urgent Replacement
Authorities warn that simply expanding the system won’t be enough the old and deteriorating pipe network must also be replaced to ensure consistent flow. Without upgrading the existing infrastructure, frequent breakdowns and distribution failures may continue to disrupt water access even if more communities are added to the supply grid.
Hope for a Water-Secure Future
As Akatsi North pushes for a district-wide water overhaul, residents remain hopeful that a modernized system will soon relieve the burden carried for years. With proper investment and infrastructure renewal, the district could finally achieve stable access to clean water unlocking better health, improved sanitation, and a stronger local economy.
