Amenfi Central’s Natural Resources Under Siege: Galamsey and Chainsaws Threaten Future
The Amenfi Central District is facing a severe environmental crisis as illegal miners, popularly known as galamsey operators, continue to destroy farmlands, forest reserves, and water bodies.

Using the destructive “dig and wash” method along river bodies such as the Ankobra River, these miners pollute water sources, degrade fertile lands, and leave behind scars that threaten the district’s ecological balance.
Chainsaw Operations in Forest Reserves
In addition to mining, the unchecked activities of chainsaw operators are wreaking havoc in the district’s forest reserves. The Mamire Forest Reserve, Fure Headwaters Forest Reserve, and Bura River Forest Reserve have all suffered extensive damage. These operations strip the land of vital forest cover, endanger biodiversity, and undermine the livelihoods of communities that depend on forest resources.
Challenges in Resource Management
Efforts to protect the district’s natural wealth are hampered by significant challenges. The lack of technical know-how among citizens in resource management, coupled with inadequate logistics for monitoring and enforcement, has made it difficult to curb destructive practices. Without stronger interventions, Amenfi Central risks losing its forests, fertile lands, and clean water sources—resources that are essential for farming, tourism, and socio-economic development.
The Call for Urgent Action
Community leaders and environmental advocates are calling for immediate measures to safeguard Amenfi Central’s resources. Investment in education, technical training, and monitoring systems, alongside stricter enforcement of environmental laws, could help reverse the damage. Protecting these resources is not only vital for the environment but also for the future prosperity of the district.
Amenfi Central’s natural resources are its greatest asset, but they are under serious threat from illegal mining and logging. Unless urgent steps are taken, the district may face irreversible environmental destruction. Safeguarding farmlands, forests, and rivers is essential to ensure sustainable development and a better future for its people.
