Pusiga DCE Unveils Plans to Transform Kulungungu Bomb Site into Tourist Attraction

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Pusiga, Abdul Rahim Aguri Haruna, has announced plans to transform the historic Kulungungu Bomb Site into a major tourism destination as part of efforts to promote tourism and stimulate economic activity in the district.

The site, located in Kulungungu, is historically significant as the location where Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, survived a bomb attack in 1962.

According to the DCE, the proposed redevelopment will include the construction of a modern statue of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and a tourist centre to attract both local and international visitors.

Mr. Aguri Haruna said the initiative was particularly important as the district seeks to explore alternative sources of economic activity following the effects of the prolonged chieftaincy conflict in the Bawku area.

He explained that the conflict had affected economic activities in Pusiga, with traffic from neighbouring Burkina Faso and Togo being diverted through Paga instead of Pusiga.

The DCE also disclosed plans to develop the district’s three-country boundary pillar, which he believes could further enhance Pusiga’s tourism potential and attract visitors interested in the area’s historical and geographical significance.

The announcement was made when Mr. Aguri Haruna led the Pusiga District Assembly and other stakeholders in a sod-cutting ceremony for development projects in Terago, Nakambo, Ninkogo, Nakom, Tindanatinga and Kolpelugu.

He urged contractors handling the projects to adhere strictly to quality standards and avoid shoddy work, stressing the need for projects to be completed on schedule and provide value to residents.

The DCE further highlighted some development interventions undertaken by the Assembly since he assumed office. These include the construction and commissioning of a three-unit classroom block at Pusiga Community Day Senior High School, the provision of boreholes and the renovation of health facilities.

The planned redevelopment of the Kulungungu site is expected to preserve an important chapter in Ghana’s history while creating opportunities for tourism, employment and economic development in the Pusiga District.

The historic site has previously been identified as having significant tourism potential, with calls for its redevelopment to attract visitors and generate income for the local community.
