Tema MCE Calls for Stronger Social Protection Systems

The Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Ebi Bright, has called for stronger social protection systems to safeguard vulnerable members of society and ensure that no one is left behind.

She said the true measure of a decent society should not be based solely on how it treats the strong and privileged, but also on how it supports the elderly, persons with disabilities, children and families facing severe hardship.

According to the MCE, social protection must not be regarded as charity but as a collective responsibility aimed at ensuring that every citizen has access to the support needed to live with dignity.

She stressed that beyond providing immediate assistance, authorities and communities must equip vulnerable people with the information, opportunities and support necessary to prevent them from falling into deeper vulnerability.

Ms. Bright therefore urged residents to actively participate in community engagements, ask questions and take advantage of social protection programmes and services available to them.

She particularly encouraged residents to utilise the free registration and renewal of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), stressing that maintaining active NHIS membership could provide crucial financial protection for families during medical emergencies.

The Tema MCE reaffirmed the Assembly's commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at improving the welfare, safety and wellbeing of residents.

She noted that the development of a city goes beyond the construction of roads, drains and streetlights, stressing that a truly developed city is also measured by how effectively it protects and cares for its people.
