The Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Hon. Elikplim Akurugu, and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ga East, Hon. The facility, commissioned on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, includes a staff common room and an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) laboratory, providing additional classroom space and improved educational facilities for pupils and teachers.
Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Akurugu explained that the project followed a tour of schools across the constituency after her election in 2025 to assess their infrastructure needs. She noted that rising enrolment had placed considerable pressure on existing facilities, forcing some pupils to learn in overcrowded classrooms.
She disclosed that the project was funded through the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) and completed within five months, from January to June 2026. She commended the MCE, the Works Department and the Ga East Municipal Assembly for their contributions to the successful delivery of the facility.
The MP also provided an update on the abandoned Abokobi Senior High School project, which she said had remained incomplete for nearly 12 years. According to her, following engagements involving her office, the MCE and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), the fund was in the process of awarding the project to a contractor for completion.
She added that the scope of the project had been expanded to include boys’ and girls’ dormitory blocks and staff bungalows. Hon. Akurugu further appealed to GETFund to prioritise abandoned school projects at the Dome MA Cluster of Schools, Anglican Cluster of Schools and Kwabenya MA Cluster of Schools.
The MP reaffirmed her commitment to improving educational infrastructure across the constituency and urged school authorities and community members to protect and maintain the new facility for the benefit of present and future generations.
For his part, the Ga East MCE, Hon. Edmund Agboh, said the project was initiated after the Municipal Director of Education raised concerns about the poor learning conditions of junior high school pupils who were studying in a pavilion near the Municipal Health Directorate.
He explained that a subsequent visit by the Municipal Education Oversight Committee confirmed the extent of the challenges, prompting the Assembly to mobilise resources to construct the new classroom block.
Hon. Agboh described the project as an investment in the future of the pupils and called on teachers, parents, school authorities and community members to ensure its proper maintenance. He also urged teachers to adhere to the Ghana Education Service code of conduct and encouraged pupils to remain disciplined and committed to their studies.
Meanwhile, Mr. Seth Anyomi, representing the Municipal Director of Education, welcomed the facility, describing it as an important intervention to address overcrowding in schools across the municipality. He disclosed that some classrooms had between 80 and 100 pupils, a situation he said was not conducive to effective teaching and learning.
Mr. Anyomi further revealed that the Assembly planned to construct additional six-unit classroom blocks at Ashongman Presby M/A Basic School, Dome Cluster Basic School, Akporman Basic School, Kwabenya Basic School and Kwabenya Atomic Basic School.
With a six-unit classroom block at Musuku already completed, he expressed optimism that the planned projects would help address educational infrastructure challenges in the municipality.
He also commended the MP for handing over a modern kindergarten facility to the Taifa Community Schools and providing 5,000 tables and chairs to support teaching and learning. He assured the MCE and the MP that the facilities would be put to effective use for the benefit of learners.
The commissioning of the Abokobi Presby M/A Basic School classroom block marks another step in efforts by the Ga East Municipal Assembly and its development partners to improve educational infrastructure, ease classroom congestion and provide pupils with a more conducive environment for learning.
