SOCO Project Delivers 41 Community Facilities To Builsa South District

The Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) Project, in collaboration with the Builsa South District Assembly, has delivered 41 community development projects to communities across the district.

The latest phase saw the inauguration of five projects at Pentengsa, Fumbisi, Batuisa and Tuedema, covering key areas including education, healthcare, sanitation and livelihoods.

Among the facilities are two fully furnished three-unit classroom blocks with offices, staff common rooms, stores and washroom facilities at Pentengsa and Batuisa. A renovated and furnished meat shop has also been provided at Yabapeling-Fumbisi.

Other projects include a water closet facility with six bathrooms at the Fumbisi Market and a completed and furnished Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound at Tuedema.

Speaking during the handover ceremonies, the SOCO Project Zonal Coordinator for the Upper East and North East regions, Samuel Larbi Agyarko, said the interventions were aimed at reducing inequality, improving access to basic social services and strengthening social cohesion in vulnerable communities.

He noted that the project had also supported the drilling of more than 21 boreholes in the district, including mechanised water systems, to improve access to potable water.

Mr. Agyarko explained that the SOCO Project uses a community-driven, bottom-up approach, allowing communities to identify their priority needs for consideration and implementation.

The District Director of Health, Emmanuel Kob-Pou, said the new CHPS compound would improve access to healthcare and enhance the quality and efficiency of health service delivery.

The District Chief Executive for Builsa South, Ann Musah, commended the SOCO Project for its holistic approach to development, saying the interventions in health, education and market infrastructure were already making a significant difference in the lives of residents.

The SOCO Project is a five-year, US$150 million World Bank-funded initiative being implemented from 2022 to 2027 in 48 districts across six regions, with the objective of reducing conflict risks, addressing climate vulnerability and improving economic opportunities.
