She said the renovation had become necessary as the facility is structurally compromised and unsafe for both patients and staff, adding that a contractor would soon visit the site to assess and provide cost estimates.
The MP revealed her plans when she donated essential medical supplies and equipment to outreach facilities within the constituency in a bid to strengthen primary healthcare delivery and improve
maternal and child health services in the municipality.
Items which included plastic chairs, weighing scales (both standing and hanging), blood pressure monitors, and glucometers, were presented to the Ga East Municipal Health Directorate at a short ceremony attended by health officials and community leaders.
Madam Akurugu said the gesture followed a tour she undertook shortly after assuming office during which she assessed the state of health infrastructure and services across the constituency in collaboration with the Municipal Health Directorate.
"Health was not left out when I began familiarizing myself with the various sectors in the constituency. We observed that many health facilities were lacking basic equipment needed to deliver quality services. At the Adenkrebi CHPS compound, for instance, the building is structurally compromised and unsafe for both patients and staff,” she revealed.
She noted that while the challenges were many, the donation marked the beginning of sustained support to revamp the health sector in Dome-Kwabenya, saying, "There is more to be done, but we have to start somewhere.”
She also announced plans to procure motorbikes for nurses serving hard-to-reach areas to enhance mobility and outreach efforts,” she added.
Dr. Maame Yaa Nhyira Essel, the Municipal Health Director, expressed profound appreciation to the MP for what she described as a “rare and focused” investment in public health.
"Many people prioritize curative care and overlook preventive services, but Hon. Akurugu has shown true commitment to public health. These items will go a long way in enhancing our child welfare clinics, wellness screenings, and community outreach programmes,” Dr. Essel stated.
She explained that the equipment would be distributed across all CHPS zones in the municipality to support routine child weighing, maternal services, and community wellness checks.
“With the BP monitors and glucometers, our community health nurses can now screen adults and elderly persons for hypertension and diabetes during home visits and at outreach points. This will allow us to detect non-communicable diseases early and offer timely interventions,” she said.
Dr. Essel noted that non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes continued to rank among the top outpatient cases in the Ga East Municipality, underscoring the urgent need for more community-level screening.
She appealed to private sector actors and other stakeholders to emulate the MP’s gesture and support public health delivery in underserved communities.
"A healthy population makes a productive society. We need more hospital beds, vehicles, and essential supplies. Every contribution makes a difference," she added.
