Each Assembly Member is set to receive GHs 1,300 monthly as part of efforts to enhance their ability to carry out their duties effectively.
The disbursement fulfills a key manifesto promise by the ruling National Democratic Congress’ vision to empower local governance structures.
The GHs 25 million represents the first tranche of an expected GHs 50 million total allocation.
Confirming this in an interview with Ghanadistricts.com, Paul Bright Mintah, Presiding Member for Ga East and Assembly Member for Kwabenya in the Greater Accra region, praised the initiative, adding that it will improve the capacity of Assembly Members to monitor government projects and promote efficient service delivery.
This will put to rest the constant reminder of the government by the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) who always feel they were not being fairly treated in the political architecture because unlike all other political groups assigned with specific roles to ensure proper development of the country, Assembly Members were left out of any remuneration.
