Ghana Establishes National Sports Fund to Secure Sustainable Financing for Athletes and Infrastructure
In a landmark move to secure the future of Ghanaian sports, Parliament has passed the Ghana Sports Fund Bill, 2025. The legislation, now awaiting Presidential assent, will establish a dedicated Ghana Sports Fund designed to provide a reliable, long-term financial foundation for sports development across the nation.

The new Act aims to address the chronic funding challenges that have hindered the sector. Historically, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has depended on irregular central government allocations and sporadic philanthropic donations to finance everything from athlete training and competition travel to the construction and maintenance of vital sporting infrastructure.
While government funding has been consistent, it has consistently fallen short of the growing demands of athletes, federations, and the need for modern facilities. This shortfall becomes especially critical for capital-intensive projects, such as building international-standard venues to prepare teams for major tournaments or to host events within Ghana.
The current reliance on benevolent sponsors, though helpful at times, has been hampered by a fragmented and ad-hoc system. Donations are often made to temporary, event-specific accounts, a practice that stakeholders have criticized for lacking transparency, centralized oversight, and the ability to track trends for strategic planning.
The Ghana Sports Fund will create a permanent, centralized, and accountable vehicle to consolidate and manage financial resources. It is designed to attract and coordinate contributions not only from the state budget but also from structured partnerships with the private sector, international organizations, and philanthropists.
“The object of this Fund is to create a sustainable financial engine for sports development and for using sport as a tool for national development,” stated a parliamentary summary.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports will maintain oversight, ensuring the Fund supports its mandate to nurture talent, promote national fitness, and develop the human resources and infrastructure required to elevate Ghana on the global sporting stage.
