The commendation was made on Tuesday when the members paid a working visit to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to assess the impact of the decongestion operation on women traders and explore avenues for parliamentary support.

Led by the First Deputy Majority Whip and MP for Ada Constituency, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah, the Caucus said they were impressed by the Mayor’s engagement with stakeholders, relocation plans for displaced traders, and his emphasis on preserving the dignity of vulnerable women in the informal sector.

“If I were to grade the Mayor, I’d give him 99%,” Hon. Cudjoe-Ghansah stated, adding, “We were concerned by what we saw on social media, but after listening to him and seeing the results on the ground, it’s clear that the AMA is not just removing people but working to find lasting solutions for our mothers and sisters in the markets.”

She said their mission was not to criticize but to support the AMA’s initiative by ensuring that the concerns of market women were adequately addressed and pledged that the caucus would present a report to Parliament on their findings, advocate for funding to complete key market projects, and continue monitoring the situation.

“We are here to bring Parliament closer to the people and ensure that vulnerable groups like single mothers are not left behind, “We are not leaving this here—we will follow through and ensure that Parliament supports the Mayor’s efforts,” Hon. Cudjoe-Ghansah affirmed.

In his welcome address, Mayor Allotey emphasized that the decongestion exercise was rooted in extensive stakeholder consultation, adding that the concerns were raised during a stakeholders' meeting.

The Mayor detailed ongoing plans to complete and repurpose market spaces, including the Salaga Market, which he noted was 85% complete.

He mentioned interim measures, such as designating the open space opposite the EOCO office and Hearts Park for temporary markets as well as launching public awareness campaigns on local radio.

The President of the Greater Accra Markets Association, Mercy Naa Afrowa Needjan, praised the Mayor’s efforts and echoed calls for improved coordination and security for market women.

“Our members are complying, and we are grateful for your leadership. We plead for better security arrangements and continued engagement,” she stated.

Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs and Member of Parliament (MP) for La Dade-Kotopon Constituency, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, emphasised the need for inclusive spatial planning and affordable trading spaces under the Sustainable Cities Project.

MP for Ahanta West Constituency, Mavis Kuukua Bissue, also praised the AMA’s strategy and said lessons learnt would be replicated in other constituencies.

“We’ll take a cue from Accra and apply similar humane methods to improve our local markets,” she said.

The visit, which included interactions with market leaders and a planned tour of affected sites, marks a new phase of collaboration between the legislature and local authorities aimed at promoting inclusive urban development.
