The €70 million Sekondi-Takoradi Water Supply Rehabilitation and Expansion Project was reported to be about 98 per cent complete when the Minister inspected the facility on February 10, 2026.

The project is expected to significantly improve potable water supply to the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis and surrounding communities, which have faced persistent water shortages due to increasing demand and limitations at the existing treatment facility. Upon completion, the upgraded plant is expected to increase water production from the existing six million gallons per day to about 22 million gallons per day, providing a major boost to water supply for households, businesses and industries in the area.

Mr Adjei, during the inspection, said the Government was aware of the water supply challenges confronting residents and was committed to addressing the remaining issues to ensure the timely completion and commissioning of the facility.

The Project Manager of STRABAG AG, Vlad Falup, said the project had entered its final testing stage, with six pumps installed and being tested to ensure that the facility was ready to treat and convey water to the metropolis and other beneficiary communities.

The project includes the construction of a new intake structure, improvements to the River Pra intake system, installation of a dedicated power supply and other infrastructure required to support the expanded treatment facility. However, the quality of raw water from the River Pra remains a major concern, with illegal mining activities contributing to high turbidity and sedimentation. The Minister therefore stressed the need for continued efforts to protect water bodies from pollution.

The expansion of the Daboase facility is expected to provide relief to residents who have endured irregular water supply while supporting the growing residential, commercial and industrial activities within the Sekondi-Takoradi area.

The project is also expected to strengthen the capacity of Ghana Water Limited to meet the increasing demand for potable water in the Western Region.
