Berekum East MCE, MP commit partner to deliver legacy projects, sanitation wins

The leadership of the Berekum East Municipal Assembly in collaboration with the Member of Parliament for the area, has affirmed their commitment to the reset agenda to bring the needed relief to the people in the area.

Hajia Fatima Abubakar, the Municipal Chief Executive told the media after their appearance before the Local Government and Rural Development Committee hearing of Audit Report Statements of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies that the Assembly is on course to make life better for the people particularly with the provision of social amenities; adding that a number of legacy projects including a-unit classroom block, administration block for the education directorate, CHPS compounds among others are being worked on already for use by the end of the year which attest to the progress they are making.

Additionally, she disclosed that the Municipality is winning the war against unsanitary environmental conditions as their regular clean-up activities are yielding positive results and commended the residents for embracing the call to keep the Municipality clean.
She is optimistic that when sustained, Berekum will return to its glorious days when it was known to be one of the cleanest cities.

She said one of the areas that has witnessed great strides is streetlighting, adding that a lot has been done to ensure the streetlights are working to provide night visibility and also ward off miscreants who try to take advantage of the cover of darkness to perpetrate their illegal activities.

The MCE noted that in view of the directives in the use of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) the Assembly has commenced rolling out new projects in various communities which completion would inure to the benefit of the people.

Adding his voice to happenings in the Municipality, the Member of Parliament for the area, Simon Kyeremeh Ampaabeng who joined to support the MCE, debunked the accession that MPs are not agents of development, stating that whatever role they play especially through lobbying or whatever that see problems being solved makes the MPs agents of development and that he will continue to do that.

The Member of Parliament who acknowledged that no human institution is without a challenge, however stated that how one surmount the challenge is the most important thing.

"...it is part of our work; anyway or form, whatever we are doing, we are doing it for the people. So certainly MPs are agents of development by way of lobbying; budgets are done in parliament, appropriations are done in parliament, major project loans are contracted in parliament; so as a Member of Parliament, you present the issues or problems that confront your Constituency to Parliament , you bring it to the attention of the cabinet and involve Ministers and make sure your problems are solved. By doing this, if this is not development, then I don't know what development can be".

According to him the Berekum inner city roads are in a deplorable state and remain a major challenge to the people.

However, he assured that they are marshalling all their efforts to ensure they are fixed, stating that with the commitment of the President and roads Minister there will be improvement soon as they continue to knock on the doors at the corridor of power to have their fair share of roads.
