According to the President, the National Review Committee is undergoing careful consultations to make a final determination as to whether or not MMDCEs must be elected by the people they serve.

"There's no doubt that Ghanaians want their MMDCEs elected. Several surveys had shown that they prefer to have their MMDCEs elected. so you may be the last to be appointed. Those who will succeed you might go through elections", the President stated.

President Mahama revealed this when speaking at the ongoing three-day orientation and training programme for all confirmed Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives across the country.

The event which is under the theme: "Strengthening Local Governance Through The Reset Agenda" seeks to remind the appointees of the crucial moment of representing the agenda of the government in line with the aspirations of the people at the local level.

He therefore urged MMDCEs to eschew political arrogance, adding that " the time for political celebrations are over, and urged that MMDCEs must work effectively and efficiently to reciprocate the confidence reposed in them by the Ghanaian people.

Touching on the 80 percent resource allocation to all assemblies through the District Assemblies Common Fund administration to fund projects and programmes, President Mahama said, he expects MMDCEs to make judicious use of the resource allocation.

According to him, the government has issued guidelines for the utilization of the resources, approved by cabinet, to show how the funds should be disbursed. This, he said, will serve as the key performance indicators for all appointees.

"Every year, we will assess your performance and based on that, we will decide whether you stay or go", the President added.

He therefore warned that resources received must be applied in a way that thoroughly reflects local priorities and long term development. To achieve this, President Mahama, urged MMDCEs to work closely with chiefs and religious bodies in the districts and civil societies to restore the social contract with the people at the local level.

On his part, the Minister for Local Government and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, revealed that out of the 261 MMDCEs, only two  assemblies namely; Tatale and Kpandai are yet to confirm their nominees while Asante Mampong and Atwima Mponmua in the Ashanti region are also yet to receive nominees.

He however, noted that the overwhelming endorsement by their respective assemblies was a clear testament of the confidence reposed in the President's nominees.
