Work Commences on Major GARID Drainage Project Along Kaneshie-Pramprom Corridor

Construction has officially begun on a major drainage improvement project under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project, leading to the closure of key sections of the Dr. Busia Highway within the Kaneshie enclave.

The project, which commenced on September 7, 2026, involves the construction of a massive double-cell underground rectangular stormwater drain stretching from Pamprom Junction to First Light Junction. The new drain will measure approximately 10 metres wide and extend 1.95 kilometres, replacing the current inadequate system of two 1.2-metre diameter pipes that have long failed to handle the volume of stormwater in the area. At one end, the drain will connect to a recently completed section within the Accra Academy campus, and at the other, to the existing drain at Pamprom Junction.

Road Closures and Traffic Management

To facilitate the smooth execution of the works, the westbound carriageway of the Dr. Busia Highway from Pamprom Junction has been closed to motorists. This first phase of the closure is expected to last until the end of November 2026, with Pamprom Junction slated to reopen in the first week of December 2026.

The closure will affect motorists travelling from Korle Bu, Graphic Road, Obetsebi Lamptey Circle, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, and adjoining corridors towards First Light Junction. Affected motorists will be diverted through Awudome Cemetery Road, New Times Road, Awudome Roundabout, Oblogo, and Mataheko before reconnecting at First Light Junction. An additional alternative route runs through the Obetsebi Interchange, Oblogo Traffic Light, and Mataheko corridor.

Project Timeline and Future Phases

The GARID Project Coordinator, Dr. Kwadwo Ohene Sarfo, announced the traffic restrictions during the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, August 26. He noted that the project would be carried out in multiple phases.

While Pamprom Junction is expected to reopen in December 2026, the remaining westbound section between Kaneshie Station and First Light Junction will remain closed until August 2027 to allow underground drainage works to continue. A subsequent phase will begin in September 2027 when construction reaches First Light Junction, resulting in the temporary closure of the road linking First Light to the Cocoa Clinic Roundabout until the end of October 2027.

The entire construction is expected to run from September 2026 to October 2027.

Government’s Commitment to Flood Control

The project forms part of the government's broader flood prevention and mitigation programme aimed at addressing perennial flooding in Accra. The GARID Project is one of Ghana's flagship urban climate resilience initiatives, seeking to reduce flood risks through improved drainage infrastructure, rehabilitate degraded wetlands and waterways, and strengthen solid waste management.

The Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources, working closely with the Department of Urban Roads, has developed a comprehensive Traffic Management Plan to ensure traffic continues to flow safely and efficiently throughout the construction period. Directional signage and advance warning signs will be installed across the affected corridors, with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) and local assemblies supporting traffic management on the ground.

GARID has urged residents, commuters, transport operators, businesses, and the general public to plan their movements ahead of the closures and use the designated diversion routes unless they have legitimate business within the affected areas.
