The project forms part of the Government's flagship 24-hour economy programme, which seeks to transform local markets into vibrant commercial hubs capable of supporting business activities around the clock.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony, the Member of Parliament for Tema West, Mr. James Enu, said the redevelopment of the Community Two Market had become necessary due to the deteriorating condition of the existing facility, which was constructed in the 1960s and no longer provides a safe and conducive environment for traders and their customers.

He said the new market would feature modern trading stalls, cold storage facilities for perishable goods, banking services, administrative offices, a health clinic, a police post, and a daycare centre to support traders, especially working mothers.

Mr. Enu appealed to the contractor to prioritize the employment of local artisans and skilled youth during the construction phase to create job opportunities for residents of the constituency.

He also assured market women that the Assembly, in collaboration with his office and market leaders, would provide suitable temporary trading spaces to minimise disruptions while construction is underway.

The MP further called on traditional authorities, community leaders, and residents to support the project to ensure its successful completion.

The Tema West Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Ludwig Teye Totimeh, described the project as a significant investment in the municipality's economic transformation, noting that it would provide a secure, organised, and modern trading environment capable of stimulating business growth.

According to him, the inclusion of social amenities such as a health clinic, police post, and daycare centre reflects the Government's commitment to improving the welfare of traders and their families.

Mr. Totimeh assured traders that the Assembly would closely monitor the project to ensure quality workmanship, strict adherence to specifications, and value for money. He also urged the contractor to complete the project within the stipulated timeframe and appealed to residents and traders to cooperate with the construction team throughout the implementation period.

The MCE expressed appreciation to the Tema Traditional Council, market executives, and members of the community for their support and collaboration toward the successful execution of the project.

When completed, the modern market is expected to expand commercial opportunities, improve productivity, and create sustainable employment, particularly for women and young people in the Tema West Municipality.
