The facility, which includes laboratory facilities, is a legacy project under the five-year Partnership for Municipal Innovation–Women in Local Leadership (PMI-WILL) project, which ends this year.

The project was implemented by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) in partnership with the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) and funded by Global Affairs Canada.

It was aimed at enhancing the rights of women and girls, particularly those from marginalised groups.

Mr Emmanuel Abbey Musah, National Coordinator of NALAG, said the project had, among other interventions, trained about 300 women in preparation for the last District Assembly elections.

He said through the project, the Saboba District in the Northern Region had benefited from a Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound, while Kwahu West in the Eastern Region received a kindergarten block at Asubone.

He added that the Tema Metropolitan Assembly had also received a neonatal facility at the Manhean Polyclinic, while Nandom in the Upper West Region benefited from a gender-based violence programme.

Mrs Mary Heather White, Project Director of PMI-WILL, expressed satisfaction with the progress of the project and thanked all stakeholders who contributed in diverse ways to its successful implementation.

She said the facility would bring healthcare closer to residents and expressed the hope that the Municipal Assembly would continue to prioritise the welfare of women, children and marginalised groups in society.

Dr Michael Opoku-Mireku, Municipal Director of Health, said the provision of the facility would help improve and integrate healthcare delivery in the area.

He called for regular maintenance of the facility to ensure its sustainability and continued use.

In a keynote address, the Atebubu-Amantin Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Masud Musah Ayarba Thomas, expressed gratitude to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and Global Affairs Canada for the intervention.

He said the facility would contribute significantly to improving maternal and child healthcare in the Municipality.

The MCE disclosed that the Assembly was currently constructing CHPS compounds at Sabidi, Masuo 44 and Adom.

He added that the Assembly was also working to address challenges relating to residential and office accommodation for the Health Directorate.

Nana Yaw Owusu Aduomi, Chief of Nyomoase, chaired the ceremony.
