Northern Regional Minister Reaffirms Commitment to Climate Action at Stakeholder Engagement

The Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC) to supporting government's climate change and sustainability agenda while calling for stronger stakeholder collaboration to build resilient communities across the region.

He gave the assurance during the Sub-National Stakeholder Engagement on Climate Change and Sustainability held at the Nim Avenue Hotel in Tamale.

The engagement brought together officials from the Office of the President, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), Coordinating Directors, Planning Officers, Heads of Departments, development partners, civil society organisations, traditional authorities, representatives of the Global Center for Climate Mobility and members of the media to discuss strategies for strengthening climate governance at the local level.

In his address, Hon. Ali Adolf John described climate change as one of the greatest threats to Ghana's socio-economic development, citing rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, prolonged droughts, floods, bushfires and land degradation as major challenges affecting agriculture, food security, water resources and livelihoods, particularly in the Northern Region.

He noted that the stakeholder engagement aligns with government's Resetting Ghana Agenda, which places environmental sustainability at the centre of national development.

The Regional Minister highlighted key government interventions, including the Tree for Life Initiative, aimed at restoring degraded forests through nationwide tree planting, and the Blue Water Initiative, which seeks to rehabilitate polluted rivers, restore water bodies and improve access to clean water.

He also welcomed government's plans to establish a National Climate Change and Sustainability Hub and dedicated Climate Change and Sustainability Units in every Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly to strengthen climate governance, improve planning, mobilise climate finance and build institutional capacity.

Hon. Ali Adolf John called for stronger partnerships among government institutions, traditional authorities, development partners, civil society organisations, the private sector and local communities to effectively address climate challenges and promote sustainable development.

He encouraged residents to support environmental conservation through tree planting, responsible waste management, protection of water bodies, bushfire prevention and the adoption of environmentally friendly practices.
