"The health facility we thought was a hoax is now a reality"-DCE

Thursday, 17 September 2026, will forever remain etched in the hearts of the people of Bedabour as a red-letter day, the day a long-awaited dream finally became a reality. For years, the people of Bedabour had watched with anticipation as a health facility intended to serve the community and its surrounding areas remained unoperational.

What some residents had begun to regard with doubt and scepticism was finally brought to life when the District Chief Executive for Atwima Mponua, Hon. Issahak Ibrahim, led a colourful ceremony to commission and hand over a modern Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compound to the people.

The short but colourful and impactful ceremony brought together residents, traditional authorities, health professionals and officials of the District Assembly to celebrate what many described as a major milestone in the development of the community.

Speaking on behalf of the District Health Director, Dr. Samed Akate, Ms. Joyce Bannerman noted that the facility would bring essential healthcare services closer to the people of Bedabour and its surrounding communities. She, however, stressed that the sustainability and success of the facility would depend greatly on community ownership, participation and collaboration between residents and health personnel.

She appealed to the people to protect the facility and support the health workers posted to the community. She further encouraged parents to ensure that their children receive their routine vaccinations, while pregnant women attend antenatal and postnatal clinics regularly.

Ms. Bannerman acknowledged the important role being played by the District Assembly in providing social infrastructure to communities, noting that such interventions have the potential to accelerate development and improve the wellbeing of residents.

In his keynote address, Hon. Issahak Ibrahim commended the NDC government for what he described as its commitment to addressing health infrastructure needs in Atwima Mponua. He said the government had deliberately tasked District Assemblies to prioritise the provision of infrastructure that would expand access to healthcare.

According to the DCE, the government's commitment to healthcare is anchored on the understanding that the wealth of every nation depends on the health of its citizens.

Hon. Issahak disclosed that the facility was originally constructed by Hon. Stephen Yeboah, but the previous administration, according to him, failed to adequately equip and operationalise it, leading to its deterioration over time.

He explained that upon assuming office, he tasked the Assembly's technocrats to explore avenues to mobilise the necessary resources to complete, equip and make the facility operational for the benefit of the people of Bedabour and its catchment communities.

With the facility now commissioned, Hon. Issahak urged residents to take ownership of it and protect it as a community asset. He appealed to the people to keep the facility clean, assist the health workers and ensure that the infrastructure is preserved for present and future generations.

The DCE also charged the health personnel to "up their game" by demonstrating professionalism, discipline and commitment in the discharge of their duties. He noted that professionalism and mutual respect between health workers and the community would help create harmony and ensure that residents receive the quality service they deserve.

In addition, Hon. Issahak disclosed that he was lobbying for a "BIG PUSH" project to extend the asphalting of the road from Bedabour to Beposo, a move he believes would improve transportation and open up the community to greater economic opportunities.

He also reiterated his commitment to helping bring electricity to the community by the end of the year. According to him, consultants from the Electricity Company of Ghana had already visited the area to assess the situation as part of efforts toward finding a lasting solution to the community's electricity needs.

On telecommunications, Hon. Issahak disclosed that the National Communications Authority had tasked contractors to construct seven telecommunications masts in areas where network coverage remains a challenge. He pledged to work towards ensuring that one of the installations benefits the Bedabour enclave, potentially addressing one of the community's longstanding connectivity challenges.

For the traditional authorities and residents, the commissioning represented a major relief.

The Odikro of Bedabour, Nana Akwasi Yeboah, who also chaired the ceremony, expressed appreciation to the government and the District Assembly for taking what he described as a huge burden off the shoulders of the people.

He encouraged the government to continue with development interventions in the community and assured that the people of Bedabour would duly appreciate meaningful development delivered to them.

The newly commissioned facility is equipped with an Out-Patient Department, waiting area, male ward, female ward, dispensary, delivery room, injection room, Reproductive and Child Health unit and nurses' quarters. The facility represents the possibility of mothers receiving antenatal and postnatal care closer to home, children accessing essential health services within their community and residents receiving medical attention without necessarily travelling long distances.

The programme ended with the official commissioning and handing over of the facility, followed by an inspection by the dignitaries. In a spectacular display of joy, residents danced their way through the community as they followed the dignitaries to inspect the newly commissioned facility.

The event was attended by the District Coordinating Director, Mr. Samuel Kwaa Gyan, Planning Officer Anas Abdulai, Engineer Ganiw Mohammed, Finance Officer Antwi Boasiako and Budget Officer Clinton Achana, Mr. Gakpetor of NADMO and other unit heads. The programme was moderated by Mr. Jephthah Kwame Sarfo, Director of Information Services.
