Kassena-Nankana West DCE Rallies Stakeholders to Boost Revenue Generation

The Kassena-Nankana West District Chief Executive (DCE), Stephen Aeke Akurugo, has intensified engagements with stakeholders across the district as part of efforts to improve revenue mobilisation and generate more resources for local development.

The initiative forms part of a broader drive by the District Assembly to strengthen its Internally Generated Funds (IGF) through increased stakeholder participation, public education and improved accountability.

As part of the engagement, the DCE met members of the Paga Youth Movement and market women in Paga to discuss ways of improving revenue collection while addressing pressing development challenges facing the community. Similar engagements have already been held in Sirigu, Mirigu, Kandiga and Nabango.

Mr. Akurugo acknowledged that although the district's location as a border enclave presents significant opportunities for revenue generation, actual collections have remained below expectations due to weaknesses in the revenue collection system.

He disclosed that the Assembly achieved its GH¢850,000 IGF target in 2025 and has set an ambitious GH¢2 million target for 2026.

According to him, achieving the new target would require intensified public sensitisation, stronger monitoring of revenue collectors and greater collaboration between the Assembly and communities.

The DCE said the Assembly would also engage revenue collectors and introduce reforms, including the provision of uniforms, to improve transparency and efficiency in revenue mobilisation.

He further urged traders at the Paga Market to demand official tickets whenever they pay their market tolls, stressing that the practice would help ensure proper accountability of revenues collected.

Mr. Akurugo said increased revenue mobilisation would provide the Assembly with additional resources to address challenges relating to water supply, sanitation and market infrastructure.

The Secretary to the Paga Youth Movement, Mandala Kassim Mubashir, commended the DCE for engaging the youth and creating an avenue for dialogue. He, however, appealed to the Assembly to pay attention to the completion of ongoing projects, registration of public lands, road improvements, water supply and sanitation.

For her part, the spokesperson for the Paga Market Traders Association, Madam Samitu Kumuriwo, expressed appreciation to the DCE for listening to the concerns of traders.

She identified overcrowding, inadequate toilet facilities, poor waste management and insufficient lighting as some of the major challenges affecting activities at the market.

Madam Kumuriwo disclosed that 22 streetlights had been made available for installation at the market and expressed the traders' willingness to continue paying their revenues, provided the funds were transparently accounted for and used to support development.

The stakeholder engagement is expected to strengthen collaboration between the Assembly and local communities while improving revenue generation to support sustainable development in the Kassena-Nankana West District.
