The 12month WASH in Health Care Facilities Project, launched at Daboase, is expected to improve access to essential WASH materials and facilities in 21 selected healthcare facilities across the district.

The initiative seeks to promote better hygiene practices in healthcare facilities and contribute to improved quality healthcare delivery in the district.

Funding Manager of WaterAid Ghana, Mr David Aidoo, said research conducted by the organisation had revealed significant challenges with WASH facilities in some health centres, noting that the situation required greater attention from both healthcare providers and facility users.

He said the project would also educate communities on their responsibility towards maintaining clean and hygienic environments. Mr Aidoo stressed the importance of responsible behaviour among community members, particularly in the proper use and maintenance of water and sanitation facilities.

As part of the intervention, WaterAid Ghana invested nearly GH¢40,000 in WASH equipment and materials, including wheelbarrows, shovels, detergents, tissue paper, rakes, brushes, cutlasses and head pans. The items were to be distributed to selected health facilities through the Wassa East District Assembly to support sanitation and hygiene activities.

The project will also build the capacity of community volunteers to serve as WASH ambassadors, helping to promote good sanitation and hygiene practices within their communities.

A steering committee comprising traditional leaders, representatives of the District Assembly and market women was also established to strengthen community participation and ownership of the project.

The initiative is being implemented in partnership with Support for Community Mobilization, a local non  environmental organisation operating in the district.

The project forms part of broader efforts to improve water, sanitation and hygiene conditions and ensure that healthcare facilities provide safer and healthier environments for patients, health workers and communities.
