The colourful festival brought together chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, development partners, and citizens from home and abroad in a celebration marked by rich cultural displays, unity, and renewed commitment to community development.

Lekoryi, celebrated by the Bakpele and Bakua people, remains an important cultural festival that promotes the shared identity, heritage, and unity of the people. The Bakpele and Bakua belong to the Guan language group, which forms part of the Volta–Comoe sub-family of the Kwa language family.

Historical accounts trace their ancestry to the ancient Ghana Empire, from where they migrated alongside other Guan groups between AD 1054 and 1076 before settling in present-day Ghana in the early 12th century through the Volta Valley.

This year’s celebration served as a platform to reaffirm the importance of peace, togetherness, and collective responsibility in promoting the socio-economic development of the Likpe Traditional Area and the Guan District as a whole.

Addressing the gathering, Hon. Godfried Kofie, District Chief Executive for Guan, commended the chiefs and people of Likpe for preserving their rich cultural heritage and fostering unity among the people.

He emphasised that unity remained a critical driver of development and assured residents of the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure, education, healthcare delivery, and economic opportunities within the district.

The DCE also highlighted ongoing development projects across the district and encouraged the youth to take advantage of government initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods and promoting entrepreneurship.

The festival once again showcased the resilience, cultural pride, and unity of the people of Likpe while providing an opportunity for dialogue, partnership, and mobilisation of resources for the development of the area.

The Guan District Assembly expressed appreciation to all dignitaries, sponsors, and participants whose contributions ensured the successful celebration of the 2026 Lekoryi Festival.
