The Atebubu teachers and educational workers welfare club has acquired a 42 seater Ashdok Leyland bus to help in the transportation of its members.
The facility which comes with a one year comprehensive insurance and a tracking device cost a total of GH¢300,000.00.
At a ceremony to launch the bus, the chairman of the club Mr. Joseph Amponsah-Fei said the decision to purchase the bus was mooted by the current executive a little over two years ago leading to a special levy of GH¢10.00 on each member of the club per month.
He recalled the agitations that ensued after the deductions began leading to the defection of their counterparts from Amantin.
He said the facility will be put at the disposal of other institutions especially schools at reduced rates whiles a technical committee to oversee the running of the bus will be put in place soon.
Mr. Amponsah-Fei expressed his gratitude to past executives of the welfare body and the district director of education for their support and asked all non members to join the club which membership is now pegged at about 800.
The Atebubu-Amantin district director of education Mr. Jokon Sulemana recalled the agitations at the start of the special levies and the twists given to the issue culminating into calls from media houses from as far as Accra and congratulated the club on its achievement in the face of all the odds.
The Member of Parliament for the Atebubu-Amantin constituency Mr. Sanja Nanja himself a teacher, traced the genesis of the club to the late 90s when welfare matters were handled by authorities of the directorate with little or no accountability.
Describing teachers as pacesetters he urged them to cooperate with government in an ongoing teacher rationalization exercise aimed at ensuring equity in teacher placements to ensure that rural schools are not unduly deprived of quality teachers.
In his closing remarks the twafohene of the Atebubu traditional area Nana Ofori Yeboah who chaired the function praised the executive and membership of the club for their achievement which includes a magnificent one storey building and asked other institutions to emulate them.
