About hundred teachers in the Talensi District in the Upper East Region who have distinguished themselves in the discharge of their duty were awarded.

The award winners who were commended for their contributions to the development of education in the district were selected from all over the district under various categories.

The District Chief Executive for Talensi, Edward Awunnore  said the initiative by the District Education Oversight Committee of which he is the Chairman has realized the causes of falling educational standard in the area are multi-faceted and is taking steps to address each of them.

According to him, lack of teacher motivation has also been identified; and since teachers are in the centre of the learning process they cannot be ignored in their quest to change the trend. “We cannot not only focus on providing more infrastructure and logistics without making sure the human resource to execute programmes and policies are well motivated.

He said though they appreciate the efforts of all the teachers, the extra commitment put in by the award winners has to be acknowledged so that they can even do more.

Awunnore urged teachers in the district to compliment efforts of the assembly and government to improve education. A number of school blocks he noted have been built, electricity extended to some of them.
He cautioned teachers against absenteeism   and warned those who would want to do things their own way, adding that authorities will institute measures to intensify monitoring.

“The district was the best in the 2012 BECE but drop from that position in 2013. This means we have not done something right and that lapse must be corrected”. According to him, this can only be possible with full compliment from all stakeholders including the teachers.

The award winners each received gass cylinder and certificate.
