The Offinso North District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Samuel Appiah-Kubi has commended the media for a good job it was doing to promote development.

He said he was impressed with the immense contribution the media was making to help change things and to make the country a better place for all.

Mr. Appiah-Kubi gave the commendation, at a press briefing to outline the district’s vision for 2014 at his office at Akumadan, the district capital.

He pledged the determination of the district assembly to give every support to the media in the performance of its duties and to continue collaborating with the assembly to safeguard the peace and ensure smooth progress.

Mr. Appiah-Kubi repeated his commitment to work hard to bring development to the Offinso North and help to recapture its former glory as the leading producer of tomatoes in the country.

The DCE noted, since the media was giving it up its best to ensure development, they should also package their programmes in such a way that they could educate the people on the activities and programmes of the assembly and not to inflame passions.

Mr Appiah-Kubi lamented the low rate of literacy in the district saying, only 33 per cent of female and 45 per cent of male were educated in the district. He said that needed urgent attention and appealed the media to help in that direction.

He announced that an education fund would be set up to help improve the situation especially at the tertiary level which represented 0.4 per cent in the district.

On sanitation, Mr Appiah-Kubi entreated the Environmental Health Department and stakeholders to handle the problem of sanitation with all seriousness it deserved in view of implications on health and other concerns of the people in the district.

The journalists at the conference commended him and called for more regular interactions to promote information flow that would keep the people adequately informed about the assembly’s activities and programmes.
