The District Coordinating Director for Offinso North, Mr. Daniel Nkrumah has stated that change of attitude towards sanitation issues was needed by all to address the sanitation problems bedeviling the country.
He said policies on sanitation could only be effective if people changed and went “back to pick the culture of the past. Mr. Nkrumah said this could be replicated when efforts were made to revive the communal self-help spirit among residents through clean-up campaigns in the district to improving sanitation.
The DCD lamented on the many black polythene bags that littered the environment and was particularly worried at how people leave their surroundings unclean, gathered rubbish, and chock gutters unattempted to, leaving them at the centre of their houses and in front of the streets without disposing them off.
Mr. Nkrumah stated these when he addressed staff of the Assembly and Zoomlion workers at the forecourt of the Assembly after intensive clean-up exercise through the main principal streets in the Akumadan township.
He announced that the assembly was organizing a five weeks communal labour to involve the assembly staff from 19th November to 17th December, 2013 after which the community would take over under the supervision of the Environmental Department and Zoomlion.
Mr. Nkrumah said until all hands were put on deck to solve the problem, it would continue to pose health problems for both man and animals because sanitation workers alone could not be left to tackle the sanitation problem.
He indicated that the Assembly spent the chunk of its internally generated fund (IGF) for the rehabilitation and maintenance of public latrines and organized public education on sanitation.
He, therefore, tasked the Environmental Department and the traditional rulers in the area to create enabling environment to ensure the enforcement of sanitation laws to address the situation.
