Assembly Members of the Chereponi District Assembly on Monday endorsed Hajia Mary Nakobu, the President’s nominee, as the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area.
She polled 26 out of the total 31 votes cast by the Assembly Members, representing 84 per cent, in an election supervised by the Electoral Commission.
With her confirmation, the 52-year-old Hajia Nakobu, therefore becomes the first woman to be nominated and confirmed in the district and the only woman nominated in the region.
Earlier Mr Bede Ziedeng advised the Assembly Members to have the development of the place at heart and vote wisely to confirm the nominee so as to develop the district.
Mr Ziedeng said it was not a healthy practice to reject the President’s nominees and appealed to all districts in the country to think of helping the government to execute its “Better Ghana Agenda” by voting to confirm nominees.
He said decision making at assemblies must promote peace and unity to propel development and urged assembly members to abstain from acts of acrimony and vilification.
Hajia Nakobu expressed gratitude to the President for nominating her for the position, and thanked the assembly members for the confidence reposed in him.
She gave the assurance that she would run an open door administration to ensure that the problems of the district were solved together adding that she would continue to consult her predecessor for the development of the area.
She said “My priority will be ensuring peace and unity, promote girl child education as well as improve infrastructure like roads to open the district up for potential investors and development.”
She explained that to demonstrate the district’s preparedness, effective measures would soon be put in place to increase the internally generated funds to support development.
