The District Chief Executive for Atiwa District Assembly in the Eastern region, Emmanuel Atta Twum has conceded that corruption is indeed a pervasive phenomenon but urges caution as to how we brand people as being corrupt.
He said it was very unfortunate that anytime there is perceived corruption in the country, society quickly blame politicians as the worse regarding this social canker.
Mr. Atta Twum was speaking to Ghanadistricts.com in an interview during a workshop at the Institute of Local Government to refresh MMDCES and local government authorities regarding their operations in the country.
The DCE commenting on the President’s remarks on the recent bashing directed towards government, as well as the brewing concerns of perceived corruption in government has welcomed the remarks of the President saying that indeed the President as a leader of the country was tackling the problem head on.
According to him, eventhough politicians were the caretakers of the state resources, they were essentially a small fraction of the population, however the problem was bigger in society than how we tend to see it.
He said even in the public/civil service and other organizations at large, the issue of corruption could not be underestimated, adding that what we needed to do as a country was for everybody to join the crusade against the latter and embrace the call to end or minimize corruption in the country.
He said until we brace ourselves as a people to tackle corruption to the bit and stop fingering politicians regarding this problem, the fight against corruption will be farfetched.
He also stated that the law enforcement agencies and institutions mandated to fight corruption must endeavour to work effectively as expected of them so we could succeed as a country in the fight against corruption.
