The Adomi Bridge will be closed to traffic today March 10, 2014 for the next two years.
The Ghana Highway Authority says the closure is for rehabilitation works to be done on the nearly ix-decade old bridge.
The bridge links the Volta and Eastern regions and is used by thousands of people on daily basis.
It spans from Atimpoku to Akrade and was designed in 1957 by William Brown of the Engineers Fox and Partners.
As part of measures to mitigate the effect of the closure of the Bridge, commuters to Ho and other parts of the country through the eastern corridor would be ferried by a pontoon from Atimpoku to Akrade.
At Akrade, an alternative route has been constructed for light duty vehicles. They will connect at Juapong to continue their journey.
Work on another road from Ho to Sogacope for heavy duty vehicles travelling to Accra is being constructed but yet to be done.
