The commissioning of the Small Town Water project at Bunkpurugu in the Northern region by President John Dramani Mahama has brought to rest the long suffering of 30,0000 residents in Bunkpurugu and surrounding towns and villages.

The commissioning of the Small Town Water project at Bunkpurugu in the Northern region by President John Dramani Mahama has brought to rest the long suffering of 30,0000 residents in Bunkpurugu and surrounding towns and villages.

The project which is supported by the Canadian government with 30 million canadian dollars and supported by the government of Ghana falls within the agenda of government to increase potable water coverage from its current 54 % to 74% by 2015.

The President reiterated his government’s commitment to the provision of potable water to all the citizens hence its resolve to collaborate with development partners and agencies to ensure that this objective is achieved, adding that significant progress has been achieved in this regard.

The president also called on would-be house owners to include in their building plans household toilet facilities to help the country achieve the MDG goals. Government is committed to putting up more public toilets across the country as part of the general effort towards improving sanitation and health.
Mr. Mahama also noted that the District is lacking in development and promised more attention to deal with the situation including improving the road networks.

The Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana also underscored the good relations between the two countries and noted that Canada has provided over Nine hundred and thirty million dollars ($930) as development cooperation to Ghana. "We are committed to work with Ghana not only in the water sector but in many other areas necessary for development especially in the remote
districts", he stated.

The Minister of Water, Resources, Works and Housing, Collins Dauda, said since 2009, the NDC government has shown determination to provide water for all by 2020. This has compelled government with support from development partners to embark on several water and sanitation projects across the country and to rehabilitate the existing once in other to move from the current 54 % to 74% by 2015. He added that The NDC government has committed two hundred and sixty million dollars for the rural water sub sector to achieve the objective.
