The District Chief Executive for the Bunkpurugu Yunyoo District Assembly, Philip Laari has called for collaboration between Asembly members, traditional leaders and stakeholders to help tackle smuggling of fertilizer into neighbouring countries.

He pointed out that the smuggling of fertilizers into neighbouring countries by some unpatriotic citizens had the tendency of derailing government’s efforts in attaining food sufficiency for the country, and advised those involved in it to put a stop to it.

This was contained in the DCE’s address delivered during the recent 29th National Farmers’ day celebrations organized in the district at Bunbuna Nakouruk, a community within the district.

He also cautioned residents against perennial bush burning which is the major factor in the degradation of our soil and environment, saying that this also contributed to thwarting our efforts in achieving sustainable food security.

“It is therefore gratifying that serious attention is being given to the whole spectrum of the agriculture landscape including efforts to reduce post harvest losses which ultimately will increase farmer’s income and nutritional needs” he added.

He however saluted farmers for their immense contribution in the agric sector, and urged them to work hard to guarantee food security for the nation.
