Teachers in the Gomoa West District in the Central Region who are occupying bungalows provided by the district assembly have been urged to return the good gesture offered them by the assembly by paying their rents.
The teachers according to the District Chief Executive, Theophilus Aidoo Mensah have refused to pay a monthly rent of ten Ghana cedis (GHs10.00) for chamber and hall, toilet and bath accommodation they are occupying. Worse of all they are not even carrying out any maintenance work to extend the lifespan of the facilities.
He said the behavior of the teachers was unfortunate and added that the assembly is planning to take drastic measures against those teachers. “If this phenomenon continues, the assembly may take a second look at the construction of teachers’ quarters in the district, he added. The DCE has therefore charged the district director of education to meet with the teachers and have them pay the accumulated rent to the assembly.
In a related development, Mr. Mensah called on unit churches to contribute something to supplement the efforts of the assembly in the provision of affordable accommodation to teachers. To him, extension of electricity and potable water to the buildings can easily be taken up by the churches to lessen the burden on the assembly, this he noted the churches have so far failed. He however, commended the Catholic Church for doing so well in this regard.
