An initiative to practically rid the environment of excess polythene waste has seriously taken-off at Zebilla and across the surrounding environs in the Bawku West district in the Upper East region.

Thus the Bawku West District Assembly is putting an economic value to the overwhelming polythene waste in the system by offering the chance for residents to collect all polythene waste which had been littered in their environs for onward sale to the assembly at reasonable rates.

The District Chief Executive for the area, Moro Anaba speaking to Ghanadistricts.com to unveil the project said the implementation of the project has already entered the third week, saying that there has been a massive patronage of the initiative by the residents since it started.

Mr. Moro Anaba indicated that the initiative emerged out of the commitment to generally boost sanitation in the district, as well as give attention to specifically reduce the incessant pollution and choking of open gutters with polythene waste in the area.

He revealed that the application of the initiative is a similar model drawn from the relevance of scrap metals in the system nowadays. He stated that scrap metals have currently become an essential commodity because of its compelling value to manufacturers.

The DCE was optimistic of the success and sustainability of the project as he confirmed that some two Chinese firms located in Tema have expressed interest to partner the assembly buy the polythene waste collected in the district, hence it was engaging them to fully seal the deal.

The initiative, which is a brand coordinated by the Sanitation/Environmental office of the assembly is being piloted at Zebilla and has it main selling point at the guinea fowl market behind the District Police Command.
