Protecting Nature, Securing the Future: Inside Mampong’s Kogyae Reserve
The Mampong Municipal Assembly continues to place strong emphasis on the preservation and sustainable use of its natural resources. At the center of these efforts is the Kogyae Forest Reserve, the largest in the municipality, covering a land area of about 115 square kilometers.

The reserve is strictly protected, with hunting, tree felling, and other harmful human activities prohibited. Its establishment was aimed at safeguarding timber and wildlife resources, maintaining the climate of the area, checking soil erosion, protecting water bodies, and preventing the southward expansion of savannah vegetation.
The importance of the Kogyae Reserve cannot be overstated. It serves as a vital ecological buffer, ensuring that the municipality retains its rich biodiversity while also contributing to climate stability. By protecting water resources and halting soil erosion, the reserve plays a direct role in supporting agriculture and sustaining livelihoods in surrounding communities.
In addition to Kogyae, the municipality is home to several other reserves, including Kyirimfa, Offin, Headwater, Ogun, and Adom. Together, these reserves cover a total land area of about 161.07 square kilometers. Collectively, they form a network of protected areas that strengthen the municipality’s environmental resilience and provide habitats for diverse plant and animal species.
Despite these conservation measures, the municipality continues to face challenges associated with environmental depletion. The cumulative effects of deforestation and unsustainable land use practices are evident in climate-related issues such as erratic rainfall patterns and flooding. These challenges highlight the need for stronger community involvement, enforcement of environmental regulations, and sustainable resource management practices.
The Mampong Municipal Assembly remains committed to protecting its forest reserves as part of broader efforts to mitigate climate change and promote sustainable development. By preserving these natural assets, the municipality is not only safeguarding its environment but also securing a healthier and more resilient future for generations to come.
