Stakeholders in the education sector in the Ketu North District in the Volta Region led by the District Assembly and the District Directorate of Education have shifted their attention to rewarding hard work of schools and individual students as step towards arresting the falling standard of education in the district.

Mr. Kofi Lawson, the District Chief Executive for the area at a meeting with assembly members said this is just one of several options being explored to improve academic performance of schools and students.

He said three years ago, the assembly instituted award for best three performing schools and is now improving the package to include best three students from the district who will be awarded one year full scholarship package to any second cycle institution.  A student’s continuous benefit is subject to review annually based on the student’s performance.

The DCE reminded Assembly Members of the significance of education as being the key to a successful future of the individuals, families, the society and the district at large, and the need to safe guard it with the resources at their disposal. He was particularly disturbed at the performance of students and schools in the district in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) last year in which as many as twelve (12) schools scored zero percent in the district.

He therefore urged the District Education Directorate to step up its supervisory role to enhance the promotion of effective teaching and learning in the district. He assured that the District Assembly will continue to provide the needed infrastructure for schools to create conducive environment for academic work.

Mr. Lawson also pointed out that, the assembly is considering reinstituting teachers award as one of the measures.
