The Aowin District Assembly in the Western Region has adopted some strategic measures to name its streets in order not to incur the wrath of government after it (government) directed all Metropolitan Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) within the country to name their streets within eighteen (18) months.

Some of the measures which are worth noting include organizing meetings with stakeholders, opinion leaders and chiefs in the various towns within the district to have their inputs particularly choosing the names for the streets.

The meeting with the chiefs and stakeholders forms part of efforts to get them involved to avert any future misunderstandings and also a means of educating them on the guidelines for initiating the exercise.

The Committee however has divided the area into nine (9) zones of which they communicate with them from time to time in order to meet the deadline even before it’s due date.

As at now feasibility studies have been carried out and the Assembly has hinted of naming about 150 streets.

Information gathered so far by Ghanadistricts.com proved that the committee will very soon publish proposed names for the 150 streets in the 9 zones for further corrections to pave way for the main exercise to take place.

President Dramani Mahama who gave the directive for the streets to be named was quoted some time ago to have told the MMDAs that:  “You are drivers of development and change in your districts and that is why I don’t understand why our streets have still not been numbered. The extent to which MMDCE’s will continue to stay in office will depend on how diligently you apply yourself to the street naming and house numbering exercise”.
