The Asunafo North Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Mohammed Kwaku Doku has commissioned nine school projects for various communities in the municipality.
They include 12-bedroom self-contained teachers’ quarters at Asumura, and 4-bedroom teachers’ quarters at Ayomso. The rest are 3-unit classroom block each at Bedabour, Antwiagyeikrom, Diasibe, Aboaboso, Abebresekrom, Ahwiahwia, and Fawohoyeden. He also commissioned 12-seater aqua-privy toilet at Kasapin to discourage open defecation to improve sanitation in the community.
According to Alhaji Doku, the school blocks were in line with the NDC government’s “Better Ghana Agenda” policy to remove all schools under trees and create conducive for teaching and learning as is the wish of Ghanaians.
According to the DCE, though the country experienced some difficult times in 2013 especially with regards to finances, it could be attributed to the rampant fire out breaks in major markets, numerous strike actions and the unprecedented Election Petition. He said the Election Petition and issues that surrounded it drove investors away and the country is now feeling the effects.
This notwithstanding, the government still managed to construct 10 basic schools worth eleven million, nine hundred thousand Ghana Cedis (11,900,000) to better basic education in the municipality.
The DCE however did not mince words in expressing his disappointment at the poor performance of students at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), adding that the performance did not commensurate with the investment made in the sector. As such a Municipal Education Oversight Committee (MEOC) has been set up to monitor the sector and make recommendations to address the inadequacies. “Teacher performance will be measured according to the performance of their students”, he decleared. He therefore entreated teachers to put up their best to improve performance of their students.
He hinted of by-laws to deal with parents who engage their wards in child labour since that prevents the children from focusing on studies. He assured the school heads of providing them with electricity, teacher’s bungalow, speed ramps, electricity generators, bicycles, as well as computers and accessories to enhance ICT education.
Mr Jonas Yeboah Yelbuori, the Municipal Education Director stated that ensuring quality education is everyone’s business. “As the government fulfils its part of the deal by providing school blocks and logistics, paying salaries, parents and teachers should do their part by providing a good atmosphere and conditions to enhance their ward’s education”, he noted.
He also asked the people to ensure proper maintenance of the buildings and charged the students to take education seriously in order not to waste the efforts of government.
Mr Jonas Yelbuori presented text books and other teaching and learning materials to the schools on behalf of the government and Ministry Of Education.
