The first batch of 27 male midwifery students has been inaugurated at the Goaso Midwifery Training School in the Asunafo North Municipality.
Goaso Midwifery Training school is among three training institutions, including Pantang, and Mampong selected by the Ministry of Health to pilot the male midwifery training programme as a measure towards improving personnel to aid in the fight against high maternal and neonatal mortality in the municipality and the district.
The school also held a matriculation ceremony for the 4th batch of students to the school.
Addressing the gathering, the Principal of the school Hajia Ahalima Opoku Hammed disclosed that the school which started in December 2010 with student population of 38 now has a total population of 285 with 27 males forming the first batch of the male midwifery.
Meanwhile, 37 students who successfully completed their course also graduated with a call on them to render selfless services towards serving mother Ghana and humanity.
Municipal Chief Executive for Asunafo North, Alhaji M. Kweku Doku whose initiative led to the establishment of the school, called on the health ministry to ensure enough personnel are reserved to serve in various communities in the municipality so that the people would realize the full benefits of the school.
Almost all the speakers also reminded the graduants that even though strike is their right; they should not make it their bargaining tool since the effects of such actions in the health profession are irreversible.
