A community water system for Hweakwae and Adausena communities in the Birim North District in the Eastern Region is about 90 percent complete.
The system is being constructed by Newmont Ghana as part of its
corporate social responsibility aimed at helping residents to enjoy
good water for domestic activities.
The system consists of a borehole which is mechanized to pump water into a large reservoir which supplies six stand pipes installed at vantage points in the community. Residents are also allowed to connect the water into their homes if they so desire.
Speaking to Ghanadistricts.com the assemblyman for Hweakwae, Bernard Owusu-Boateng expressed delight at the intervention Newmont is making in the communities. According to him prior to this, the community depended on only 4 boreholes constructed by the government and the district assembly. This was woefully inadequate and most people had to struggle or spend long period trying to get water.
In a related development, similar small town water system provided by Newmont Ghana for Old Abirem in the same district was commissioned and handed over to the community. It has seven stand pipes with one institutional pipe at the Old Abirem Primary School.
Mr. Yaka Felix, the assemblyman for Old Abirem also noted that the
small town water system will increase access to water in the community adding that the community was compelled to rely on only two boreholes over the years. He however, urged residents to connect to their homes to reduce pressure on the community pipes.
