The Birim North District Assembly in the Eastern Region is instituting measures to make judicious use of its mining resources to develop the area into self sustaining district.
Speaking to Ghanadistricts.com, Isaac Kwame Adjah, Presiding Member of the district indicated that the assembly is concerned about the current level of poverty in the district in spite of the natural resources especially gold that the district is abound with. As such the assembly is developing a long term strategic plan to harnessing whatever they derive from the mining sector to ensure they improve the other sectors of the economy of the district.
He said human resource and infrastructure development remain the two most important areas of attention. To this end, the assembly is to establish strategic institutions to propel this agenda of making the Birim North District mining and industrial hub in that enclave.
The PM also indicated that in order to achieve favourable results the assembly looks forward to regulating various mining concessions including large, small-scale as well as illegal mining activities which have become a bane on the district. According to him, if things are not well structured it may hinder development since the mining sector would be used improve other sectors like agriculture to include value addition, agriculture commercialization and mechanization.
He added that Integrated Social Development Centre (ISODEC) is spear heading this new reform in the mining sector in the district and is confident of success.
