The fight against illegal mining continues in the Birim North District in the Eastern Region as authorities are also determined to bring sanity into the small scale mining industry.

The fight against illegal mining continues in the Birim North District in the Eastern Region as authorities are also determined to bring sanity into the small scale mining industry.
About 25 machines used by the illegal miner were today destroyed by following a joint security operation in the district. Other items affected by the operation also included temporal structures used as habitat by the miners for their operations.
Speaking to Ghanadistricts.com, District Chief Executive for the area, Aboagye Paul Dadzie said one suspect caught in possession with locally manufactured gun have been arrested and is in police custody for further interrogation.
Birim North is one of the major mining areas in the Eastern Region where some major firms like Newmont have concession, as such the indigenes are not only taking advantage to cash on to make a living but have also connived with some foreigners who are using heavy duty equipments in their operations contrary to the rules and regulations governing small scale mining in Ghana.
Most affected Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies are spending huge sums of money to curb the menace following the negative implications illegal mining is having on especially the environment, education and other social lives.
