SEFWI A: District to get storm drains

Barring any unforeseen circumstance some communities in the Sefwi Akontombra constituency in the Western Region will witness the construction of concrete drains.
The measure forms part of efforts by government to address the perennial erosion problem at Kojokrom, Aprutu, Nkwadum,a nd Bopa all in the constituency.
This was disclosed yesterday by the minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing, Alhaji Collins Dauda, in Parliament in a response to a question tabled by MP for the area, Mr Herod Cobbina, on the outcome of the investigations by the Hydrological Services Department on the extent of soil erosion in some parts of the area.
According to him "a study conducted revealed that major gullies had developed in various parts of the community as a result a storm runoff and poses great danger to buildings as they tend to undermine their foundations."
He observed that the Hydro-logical Services Department in its report proposed the construction of concrete drains to tackle the erosion problem, adding that implementation would commence when funding was available.
The minister in response to another question outlined measures been put in place to provide the community with portable water under the Small Town Water and Sanitation Systems.
The Sefwi Akontombra District is one of the eighteen (18) districts in the Western Region and among the new districts and municipalities created in 2008 by the then President, John Agyekum Kufuor.
Describes as one of the oldest districts in the Western Region, the district has produced four other districts which includes Sefwi Bibiani District, Jubouso District, Bia District and the Sefwi Akontombra District.
It is located in the north eastern part of the region and bordered to the north of the Brong Ahafo Region and has twenty six electoral areas currently.
Agriculture is the major economic activity in the district in terms of employment and income generation, with about 80 % of the working population engaged in the sector.
