Population explosion in the Atwima Kwawoma District in the Ashanti Region is having a serious toll on the district.
This according to the District Chief Executive, Anthony Nyame was due to the proximity of the district to the Kumasi Metropolis. People consider most communities in the district an extention of the Kumasi Metropolis and chose to reside in the district while working in the capital.
The situation he stated comes with a number of challenges which may sometimes be very difficult for the assembly to solve.
One of such is waste management. The DCE said the district was already overwhelmed with refuse compelling the assembly to channel a large chunk of its resources into managing the situation to avoid disease outbreak.
Another aspect that has compounded the situation which needs early attention is lack of places of convenience. Due to the absence of toilet facilities, people are compelled to defecate anywhere in the environment, a situation that poses serious health challenges to the environment.
He expressed regret that at the moment the assembly can only collect the refuse from the communities to a final dumping site which is not sustainable due to problem with land acquisition.
He therefore hoped the assembly could get assistance from the private sector to institute waste treatment plants to process the wastes into other useful substances for use.
Anthony Nyame however assured that the assembly will do its best to contain the situation until a lasting solution can be found and appealed to residents to be mindful of the way they dispose off waste to make collection simple for the collectors.
