The distribution, which took place on Monday, February 9, 2026, included 550 waste bins, 1,000 shovels, and hundreds of wheelbarrows, along with other sanitation tools aimed at improving routine cleaning operations and supporting emergency interventions such as desilting drains and preventing flooding. The move ensures that every assembly in the capital region is better equipped to maintain clean surroundings and respond swiftly to sanitation emergencies.
The handover ceremony was led by the Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, on behalf of the Sector Minister, Ahmed Ibrahim. She stressed that the provision of the sanitation equipment reflects government’s commitment to strengthening local governance systems and empowering assemblies with the tools needed to deliver effective sanitation services.
Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah noted that sanitation remains a shared responsibility and that equipping assemblies directly enhances their operational capacity to keep communities clean, prevent disease outbreaks, and improve overall public health standards. She emphasized that government is focused on ensuring sanitation policies are not only formulated but supported with practical resources for implementation at the local level.
The intervention forms part of a broader national strategy to promote cleaner cities, reduce environmental health risks, and enhance resilience against flooding and sanitation-related emergencies. With the new equipment in place, assemblies across the Greater Accra Region are expected to intensify sanitation activities and sustain efforts toward creating cleaner, safer, and healthier communities.
