According to the NCCE, human rights were essential for promoting dignity, equality, and justice in society while human rights were not just a moral imperative, but a legal obligation that governments and individuals must respect and protect.

Madam Woelikplim Afetorgbor, Assistant Civil Education Officer in Anloga, said that the theme for this year's Human Rights Day, which fell on December 10, was "Our Everyday Essentials".

It highlighted the importance of basic human rights such as access to education, healthcare, and freedom from violence and stress, which were essential for human development and must be prioritised by all.

"Human Rights Day is celebrated annually on December 10 to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948," she said.

She noted that the day served as a reminder of the importance of promoting and protecting human rights, and the need for continued efforts to achieve a just and equitable society.

Madam Apetorgbor explained that the country had made significant progress in promoting human rights, but there was still much work to be done and called on the public to join efforts to promote and protect human rights, and to report any abuses to the relevant authorities.

"We are urging every individual, communities, and institutions to take action to promote human rights, including volunteering with human rights organisations to advocate for policy changes, and spread awareness about human rights issues."

She also appealed to the government to strengthen institutions responsible for promoting and protecting human rights and to provide adequate resources to support human rights initiatives for the nation's progress and development.

She emphasised that human rights were not just a concern for governments, but also for everyone and urged all citizens to take responsibility for promoting and protecting human rights, and to work towards creating a society that values dignity, equality, and justice for all.

She noted that human rights were essential for human development and must be prioritised at all courses while the cerebration served as a reminder of the importance of promoting, prioritising and protecting human rights, and the need for continued efforts to achieve an equitable society for all.

Madam Apetorgbor said the efforts to promote human rights were part of the commission's broader mandate to educate and engage citizens on civic issues which were crucial in promoting good governance, democracy, and human rights in the country.
